XXXL size in numbers

If a listing gives you a letter and a number and they don't agree, this is why — and which one to believe.

In Indian menswear, XXXL is a 46. A 44 is usually XXL. If you have seen XXXL described as a 44, you have run into a brand that grades a size small against the convention — which is common enough to be worth checking every time.

Letter to number, XXL to 10XL#

The numbers step by two, and they describe the chest in inches:

LetterAlsoNumberChest (in)
XXL2XL4444–46
XXXL3XL4646–48
XXXXL4XL4850–52
XXXXXL5XL5054–56
6XL5258–60
7XL5462–64
8XL5666–68
9XL5870–72
10XL6074–76

You will notice the number and the chest range stop lining up above 4XL. That is not a typo. The numbering convention was built for a size run that ended around XXL and it has been extended by habit rather than by design, so the further up the range you go, the less the number means. Above 5XL, ignore the number and use inches.

Why brands disagree#

They grade their own patterns and nobody checks. There is no enforced Indian standard requiring a 3XL to measure any particular thing, so each brand's size run reflects its own base pattern, its own customer, and often its own manufacturing convenience.

The practical consequence: the letter tells you where you sit in that brand's range, and nothing else. It does not transfer. Two 3XL shirts from two brands can differ by three inches at the chest and both be correctly labelled.

This gets worse as you go up, because larger sizes are more often scaled from a medium than drafted from scratch. Scaling multiplies width evenly and gets depth wrong, which is why a size that fits your chest can still be tight across the back or short in the body.

Shirt numbers versus t-shirt numbers#

A genuine source of confusion, and it has a clean explanation.

  • Formal and casual shirts are usually numbered by the garment's chest in inches. A 46 shirt measures about 46 inches around when buttoned and laid flat and doubled.
  • T-shirts are usually sold by letter. Where they do carry a number, it more often describes the body it was drafted for.

So the same person can genuinely be a 46 in a shirt and an XXXL in a tee, with no contradiction. It also means you cannot carry a shirt number across to a t-shirt and expect it to work.

Trouser waist numbers#

Trousers are the one place the numbers are reliable, because a waistband is a garment measurement and there is nowhere to hide.

If you wear a 42 trouser, you buy a 42. The complication above 3XL is not the number, it is the rise — the distance from the waistband to the crotch seam. A body that carries weight at the front needs more length there, and a trouser scaled up from a medium does not add it. That is why a trouser that fits your waist can still pull at the seat and sit wrong at the front.

If a brand publishes a rise measurement, that is a good sign. Very few do.

The short version#

Believe the inches. Treat the letter as a sort order and the number as a rough hint. Measure once, write it down, and check it against whatever the brand actually publishes — and if they publish nothing, weigh that in before you order.

Questions people actually ask#

Is XXXL a 44 or a 46?

In Indian menswear XXXL is normally a 46. A 44 is usually XXL. If a brand labels its XXXL as a 44, they are running a size small against the convention — check their chart before ordering.

Is XXXL the same as 3XL?

Yes. XXXL and 3XL are the same size written two ways.

What number is 4XL?

48 in most Indian menswear. 5XL is 50, 6XL is 52, 7XL is 54. The numbers usually step by two.

Why do shirt numbers and t-shirt numbers differ?

Shirt numbers usually describe the garment's chest measurement in inches. T-shirts are more often sold by letter only, and where they carry a number it tends to describe the body. That is why the same person can be a 46 in a shirt and an XXXL in a tee without either being wrong.

What waist number goes with XXXL?

Around 42 inches, though trouser waist labels in India describe the garment's waistband and are more reliable than shirt numbers. Measure a trouser you own across the waistband, double it, and buy that number.
