XXXXL size in inches
XXXXL and 4XL are the same size written two ways. Here is what it measures, why it measures something different at every brand, and how to tell which side of it you fall on.
XXXXL, also written 4XL, is usually drafted for a 50–52 inch chest in Indian menswear and a 46–48 inch bust in womenswear. In centimetres that is 127–132 and 117–122. Those are body measurements — your chest, not the shirt's.

Neck is the one to write down if you buy formal shirts. It is the measurement that decides whether the shirt is wearable, and it is the one brands most often leave out.
4XL vs XXXXL vs 48 — same thing?#
4XL and XXXXL: yes, identical. Two notations for the same size.
4XL and "48": usually not. A numeric 48 on an Indian shirt is typically a 3XL, not a 4XL. Numeric shirt sizing in India generally tracks the chest measurement of the garment in inches, which is why the numbers look one size out of step with the letters. If a listing gives you both, believe the number and check it against a shirt you own.
4XL for men and 4XL for women: no. Roughly four inches apart at the chest, in the direction you would expect. A unisex 4XL is drafted on a men's block almost every time, which is why it fits a lot of women badly through the shoulder even when the chest is right.
The same label at different brands#
Here is the part that makes this page worth writing. Amydus is the only store we list that publishes a chart covering extended sizes. From their published chart, checked 15 August 2026, their 4XL is drafted for a 44 inch bust.
The womenswear convention is 46–48. So their 4XL sits close to what most of the market calls a 3XL, and if you order it expecting a conventional 4XL, it will arrive small.
They are not doing anything wrong — it is their range, graded their way, and they published it, which is more than the other five stores we list have done. But it demonstrates the thing worth internalising: a size label is a brand's internal reference, not a measurement. The only numbers that transfer between brands are inches.
Full point-of-measure table#
If a brand gives you garment measurements instead of body measurements, this is roughly what a well-drafted 4XL shirt should measure flat:

The gap between the body column and the garment column is the ease — the room the cut allows. Four to six inches on a t-shirt, five to seven on a formal shirt, eight or more on outerwear, close to nothing on jeans.
What to do if you are between 4XL and 5XL#
- Woven, no stretch — shirts, jeans, chinos, jackets: size up. Woven fabric does not forgive, and a shirt that pulls at the button placket is not something you will wear twice.
- Jersey, or anything with elastane: stay at 4XL. A 2 percent elastane content covers roughly two inches of difference, and the cleaner line is worth more than the extra room.
- Formal shirts: buy for the neck, then check the chest. If the neck fits and the chest does not, that is a different brand's problem, not a different size's.
- Between sizes at a brand that publishes garment measurements: stop guessing entirely. Measure a shirt you already like, flat, and match the numbers.
