XXXXL size 18 is probably what you searched, and the honest answer is no. In every women's plus-size chart we checked, 18 sits at XL or the start of XXL, not four X's up.

In short: size 18 is XL to XXL in Indian charts. XXXXL lands anywhere from 22 to 28 depending on the brand, so trust the bust in inches, not the number.

What actually fits a size 18 today#

The live shelf needs JavaScript. XXXXL clothing for women and XXXXL dresses carry the same stock without it, and the measurement board will tell you what to ask for at every brand.

A word on what that shelf is doing, because it is not the obvious thing. It is not showing you everything labelled XXXXL. It is showing you the pieces whose own brand's published chart says they are cut for a 42 inch bust — which is why an Amydus XXXXL appears, drafted at 44 inches, and a XXXXL drafted at 58 does not.

Pick a different size and the shelf changes with it, because it is reading measurements rather than labels. That is the whole difference between this and a size filter.

Two things in that first table are worth stopping on. A size 18 is a 42 inch bust, and 42 inches falls inside both the XL range and the XXL range — which is not a contradiction, it is twenty-two brands disagreeing in public. And the narrowest XXXXL on the list, Amydus at 44 inches, is only two inches above a size 18, while the widest is nearly sixteen inches above it. Four X's on a label tells you almost nothing on its own.

The US and UK columns are the published relations to the bust rather than to each other, US being the bust in inches less 28 and UK less 24. Japan is JIS L 4005, which stops at a 124cm bust and hands over to 3L, 4L and up, none of which the standard defines. China is not in the table because a Chinese label cannot be: GB/T 1335.2 builds it from the wearer's own height, as in 160/108A, so nobody can fill it in for you. Any conversion chart that prints a fixed Chinese size is printing a height it invented.

If those two panels answered it, you are done. What follows is the evidence behind them, and it is worth the ten minutes if you have ever ordered the size you always take and had it turn up unwearable.

Where "size 18" actually sits on the ladder#

Start with the one part of this that isn't in dispute. Amydus, one of the plus-size brands we track, states its own ranges plainly: XL covers sizes 16 to 18, and XXL covers 18 to 20. That's the brand's own wording, not a market average pulled from nowhere.

Two sizes matter here. First, 18 straddles XL and XXL. It is not exclusively either one. Second, here's the part worth sitting with. If 18 is where XL ends and XXL begins, XXXL and XXXXL are still two and three steps further up. A size 18 shopper looking at a 4XL rail has wandered two sizes past their own.

Practical rule: if a product page shows both a letter and a number, and the number is 18, check the letter next to it. It should say XL or XXL. If it says XXXL or XXXXL on an 18, one of the two labels is wrong, and it's worth asking the seller which one they actually mean.

So is XXXXL actually a size 18?#

No, not in any chart we found. Every source that gave a number for XXXXL placed it well past 18: general plus-size guides put the loose "3X to 4X" range at 22 to 24, and a couple push XXXXL as high as 26 to 28 once you're using the older American 1X/2X/3X/4X convention rather than a straight UK-style ladder. Nobody we checked put an XXXXL anywhere near 18.

That spread itself is the real story. Two sizes labelled XXXXL from two different charts can be four numeric sizes apart, which is a bigger gap than the letters admit to. It's the same problem the site has already found in menswear, where XXXL sold as a 44 is not a misread, it's a brand grading small against convention. Above XXXL, women's numeric sizing has the same trouble, only worse, because two competing number systems (the UK-style 16-18-20-22 ladder and the older US 1X-2X-3X-4X ladder) are both in circulation at once, and a size tag rarely says which one it's using.

Believe the bust measurement, not the number#

This is where the site's own convention chart earns its keep, because it sidesteps the numeric argument entirely. In inches, not dress sizes, Indian womenswear generally drafts XXL for a 42 to 44 inch bust, XXXL for 44 to 46, and XXXXL (4XL) for 46 to 48. Those are body measurements, and they are the market convention rather than any single brand's real chart. The full table, across every size from XXL to 10XL, is in XXXXL size in inches.

Where a brand actually publishes its own numbers, trust that over both the convention and any dress-size guess. Amydus publishes a full body chart from 2XL to 9XL, and their own 4XL is drafted for a 44 inch bust, not the 46 to 48 the general convention would suggest. That's not a mistake on their part. It's their range, graded their way, and they published it, which already puts them ahead of brands that don't. It also means a person who normally wears a conventional 4XL can end up needing Amydus's 5XL instead, once you compare the actual inches rather than the letter on the tag.

What to do with a size 18, 20, or 22 on a product page#

If you already know your number, you don't need the letter at all, and skipping straight to inches will save you a return.

  • You're an 18. Try XL first. Check the bust in inches if the brand gives one; the convention for XL is roughly 40 to 42 inches, but confirm against whatever that specific store publishes.
  • You're a 20. XXL is the likely start point, by Amydus's own numbers, though some brands will already have you in XXXL territory by here. Measure your bust and compare it to the chart directly rather than trusting either letter.
  • You're a 22. This is where the two number systems genuinely disagree with each other, UK-style ladders put you around XXXL, American 3X/4X style charts can put you as high as XXXXL. Bust inches are the only number that won't move depending on which system the brand happens to be using that day.

None of this replaces measuring yourself. The measurement board takes your bust, waist and hip once and checks it against each brand's real chart where one exists, so you're not doing this comparison by hand every time you shop.

Questions people actually ask#

Is XXXXL a size 18? No. Every chart we checked places XXXXL well above 18, generally somewhere in the 22 to 28 range depending on which numbering system the brand is using. Size 18 is XL, or the very start of XXL.

What number is XXXXL for women in India? There's no single answer, which is itself the honest answer. Convention puts a 4XL bust at 46 to 48 inches. In dress-size numbers that loosely lands between 22 and 28, and brands disagree on exactly where inside that range. Amydus's own 4XL, for comparison, is drafted for a 44 inch bust, a size smaller than the general convention.

Why do XL and XXL agree more than XXXL and XXXXL do? Because the lower end of most size runs was drafted first, back when a brand's range only went up to L or XL, and the extended sizes above that were added later, often by scaling rather than by fresh drafting. The further up the ladder you go, the less anyone actually agreed on it in advance.

I'm a 20 at one store and a 4XL at another. Which is right? Both, for that store. A label only describes where you sit in that specific brand's own range. It doesn't transfer to a different brand's rail, and the number is exactly as local as the letter is.
